The Cavalier

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a delightful little dog, and like most Toy Dogs he has been bred to be a companion.  As such he treasures being with you, and keeping you company most of the day.  He will get on equally well with children and older people.  Cavaliers are not happy without company, so are not recommended for people who are likely to go out to work or otherwise be away from their dog for constant long periods of time.

He is eager to please, and although he may not be the brightest in the intelligence stakes, he is trainable and willing to learn.   Actually some are very bright indeed especially when it comes to stealing food, or escaping.  In the past, some have even been trained as small gun dogs.

Many cavaliers enjoy doing Agility or the new Rally.  They love exercise and going for walks although most will be content with a modest 20 minute walk twice a day especially if they have a good sized garden to romp in too.

There are a great many books and various websites out there where you can learn all about the history of the breed, and in particular I really like Dennis and Tina Holmes’s regular column.  Puppies supplied by Kennel Club Assured Breeders will go to their new owners with a pack containing wealth of information, a supply of the food they are used to, and a comfort blanket or toy together with a Contract of Sale.  To find out more about the ABS visit the Kennel Club web site.

Cavaliers come in four colours – Blenheim (brown/red and white), Tricolour (black white and tan), Black and Tan, and Ruby.   By the way they are NOT called “King Charles Cavalier”.  The King Charles spaniel is a different breed (although from the same original source way back when, as was the Papillon).
